About the Author
Teri Kwal Gamble and Michael W. Gamble both earned PhDs in communication from New York University. They are full professors of communication and award-winning teachers, with Teri at the College of New Rochelle and Michael at the New York Institute of Technology in Manhattan. As co-founders of Interact Training Systems, a communication consulting fi rm, they have conducted seminars, workshops, and short courses for numerous business and professional organizations across the United States. The Gambles are co-authors of several textbooks and training systems, including Public Speaking in the Age of Diversity; Interpersonal Communication in Theory, Practice and Context; and Literature Alive! Their trade books include Sales Scripts That Sell, Phone Power, and The Answer Book. Teri and Michael live in New Jersey and spend much of their time exploring how and why communication works. Their personal favorite communicators are their children?their son, Matthew Jon, who has his doctorate in biochemistry and is now a scientist, and their daughter, Lindsay Michele, who received her MBA in marketing, ran the New York City Marathon, teaches this course, and works in real estate.

In recent years they have been actively involved in teaching communication skills to sales and marketing representatives for a number of corporations. In addition to the basic communication course, Teri and Michael have a wide interest in communication studies and have developed and taught a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses including gender and communication, leadership and team building, conflict management and negotiation, public relations and public relations writing, organizational communication, communication theory, communication law and ethics, writing for organizations, legal communication and trail consulting, sales communication, and the communication consultant as entrepreneur. Teri and Michael live in New Jersey. Their children have grown up with this text. Twenty-five year old Matthew is now a Doctoral Candidate in Molecular and Cell Biology preparing a dissertation in the field of transcription, and nineteen-year old Lindsay is a Division I Scholar/Athlete playing Soccer for a Big East university while she is pursuing a degree in Marketing and Entrepreneurship.

Note To The Author: Opinion or Text... Make Up Your Mind

Maybe I have it wrong, but I was under the impression that the definition of a good textbook was one that presented data in a precise yet beguiling manner. Opinions, be they social, political, personal or otherwise, would be left out of the mix.
This premeditated omission serves a double purpose. The first is to allow the professor to add their own individual nuances and flavor to the body of the course material. The second purpose would be to allow the student to use the presentation of the straight facts, absorbed in the text reading assignments, to draw their own conclusions.
There are seemingly thousands of useless graphs and photos,
printed in full color. This fluff seems to be soley designed to drive the price up to almost $80.00! There also seems to be an extremely overt effort, on the part of the authors, to make the text "current" by mentioning 911 as many times as possible and
including Justin Timberlake and similar such soon-to-be-forgotten icons of the month as suggested listening. This almost guarantees that, by the time another fall semester rolls around, this text will be outdated and force the "new" version to be thrust upon the already broke student. This is text writing style that makes publishers accounting department heads grin ear to ear. And in the authors rush to push opinion
on the student, they seem to forget that 1970s and 1980s polls and surveys (footnoted) used to form theories are hardly worth the paper they are written on twenty and thirty years later. If the student is to believe that the world and the world of communication is changing at alarming speeds, how can trendy theories from a generation ago apply to modern social norms? They cant. The authors simply used outmoded theories to back up their own sweeping generalization that pour forth from the texts pages.
And, just one more thing...........Our world is littered with terminology. Why present new "terminology" for the student to memorize that will NEVER be used in the business world. Why invent a now expression for a concept already printed and defined in Websters. If absolutely mandatory, the very least the authors could do is to remember the rule I learned in the seventh grade: Never use the word you are defining in the definition of said word.

If this is Communications, then it should not be an academic discipline

Seriously, this book is utter garbage. It is simply a rehashing of psychological hypotheses, sociological correlations and worst of all, management skills.
I cant believe that this is what Communications majors actually study. It appears to be common sense. Heres a quote for you: Attraction is affected by the attractiveness. WOW! Gamble & Gamble actually bothered to write that down somewhere, and people are supposed to read this and feel smart from it?
All this book has taught me is a severe distrust of the social sciences. Their overuse of the word "theory," a legitimate scientific word referring to a thorough explanation of a particular phenomena, is horrifying. What they really have are not theories in the scientific sense, but are closer to hypothesis or worse, conjectures. Little evidence is found in any of these "theories," besides vague percentages indicating correlation between two sets of data. Rarely is the percent astonishingly high that would indicate a valid hypothesis.
Sorry guys, but this book is garbage. All Ive learned is that one should not trust Psychology, Sociology, Business or Communications majors. And that is a shame for the first 3, because they are more legitimate than this written swill.

What a Waste of $10

I purchased this book because it was required for a college communication course and about 70% of the material it covers is common knowledge. Im sorry but, if you made it to college without knowing what "branding" is or "why stereotyping is dangerous," then you should consider re-enrolling yourself in a better high school before you try to pursue a legitimate college education.
